Max Rosenbaum was born in New York in 1887 and later moved with his family to Selma, Alabama. After serving in World War I, he traveled around visiting friends from the Army. In 1923, Rosenbaum married Ruth Elgutter, the daughter of a prominent Jewish family that immigrated from Germany to Newellton, Louisiana, near Natchez, and then to Baton Rouge.
